Data, Import & Export

The Data tab displays saved point-marking, distance, area, altitude, track, and speed records. Only categories that currently contain data appear at the top.

Subscription and allowances

The Free plan stores up to three records of each type. Exporting and sharing data packages requires Premium. See Premium Subscription.

View and edit a record

  1. Open Data.
  2. Select a category at the top.
  3. Tap a record card to open its details.
  4. Choose Edit from the upper-right menu, then save again when finished.

Each card shows its name, saved time, and a type-specific summary such as point count, total distance, or area and perimeter. A saved track shows its average speed, calculated as total distance divided by actual recording time; paused time is excluded.

Delete a record

Open the record, choose Delete from the upper-right menu, and confirm. This removes the record and related app-managed attachments. Copies already exported, written to Photos, synced to iCloud, or saved by another person are not deleted at the same time.

Export

From a saved record, choose Export and select a format. The system share sheet lets you save to Files or send the file to an app of your choice.

FormatBest forRetention
Pocket GPS (.pocketgeo)Full backup or migration between Pocket GPS installationsPreserves records, point fields, notes, and media attachments
GeoJSON (.geojson)GIS and web mapsPreserves geometry and rich attributes, but does not package media files
CSV (.csv)Spreadsheet analysisPreserves per-point fields; not suitable for complex attachments
GPX (.gpx)Fitness devices and track appsFocuses on tracks, routes, and waypoints; app-specific fields may be lost
KML (.kml)Google Earth and map toolsPreserves map geometry; app-specific fields may be lost
WKT (.wkt)GIS and database geometry exchangePrimarily geometry; business metadata and attachments are not fully retained

For a lossless restore, prefer Pocket GPS format and protect the exported file. An export may contain precise locations, timestamps, notes, and photos. Verify the recipient before sending it.

Share with Friends

The upper-right menu on saved point-marking, distance, area, altitude, speed, and track records also includes Share with Friends. It creates a Pocket GPS (.pocketgeo) package directly and opens the system share sheet, making it the quickest way to send restorable data to another Pocket GPS user.

To create GeoJSON, CSV, GPX, KML, WKT, or another general-purpose format, continue to use Export and select the format yourself.

Import

  1. Open Data and tap the import button in the lower-right corner.
  2. Tap Choose File and select a file using the system picker. The app first identifies the file format.
  3. Select the record type you want to create. At this stage the app only parses the file and does not write any data.
  4. Under Recognized Content, verify the record count, point count, and destination data type.
  5. Tap Confirm Import to create the records and display the import result.

Supported formats include GeoJSON, GPX, KML, CSV, WKT, Pocket GPS packages, and recognizable JSON files. The selected record type must match the geometry in the file. For example, importing track data as an area may fail or produce an unexpected result.

Open a Pocket GPS package directly

When you receive a .pocketgeo file, you can also choose to open it with Pocket GPS from Files or another app. The app imports every supported business record and packaged attachment, switches to the Data tab on success, and reports either the imported count or an error. Legacy .gpstoolbox files remain importable.

This route is only for Pocket GPS packages and determines record types from the package, so you do not select a target type first. Continue to use the import control in Data for other formats.

Back up before importing

Import creates new records and does not automatically merge or deduplicate names. Export a Pocket GPS backup before a large import.

Where data is stored

  • By default, formal records are stored in the app’s local SwiftData database.
  • Drafts and unsaved media stay in local app support storage and are not included in iCloud sync.
  • When you enable iCloud sync, the app first migrates existing formal attachments. After restart, formal records and attachments can sync between devices using the same Apple Account.
  • Export destinations are chosen in the system share sheet and are no longer controlled by the app afterward.

Location and sensor readings are for reference only. Always assess your surroundings.
